off licence were closed and awaiting its fate. A former proprietor was Wally Blackshield who with his wife Mary ran it from March 1962 and
possibly to closure. |

driveway to the surgery car park. A telephone box still stands to the right of the turning - though of an updated design
and no longer the once familiar red associated with public call boxes. |

a reminder that houses once stood there. |

The Off Licence stores stood at No.1 Paynters Hill, off
London Road, Vange. Following closure in the 1980s the building was demolished and the Southview
Park Surgery now stands on the site. Paynters Hill, (sometimes seen as Painters Hill), had originally been part of
the course of London Road but sometime, possibly in 1924, the County Council approved a by-pass proposal to realign
London Road to eliminate the bend and hill climb and in doing so this section then became a separate road. There
is still a small section left at the eastern end (though not recognised by name on local maps) where
two occupied cottages that pre-date the New Town stand. The remaining area, including the site of
the Vange War Memorial, is built over with housing and a small neighbourhood centre at what is
now Marsh View Court. The War Memorial that once stood at the top of the hill, having been
unveiled in November 1922, still exists, and can now be seen on the green in front of St. Chad's
Church in Clay Hill Road, close to the Riverview neighbourhood centre. In the 1980s the Paynters name was recognised
following the construction of new housing in a short cul-de-sac off Vange Hill Drive, which was given the name
Paynters Mead. |

Other points of interest:
1) At the time of the Paynters Hill bypass
the road was said to be in very bad condition. In late 1924 Essex County Council's Highways Committee put aside £3,313 for its
construction. |
