The Towngate was a public house in Fodderwick, Basildon Town
Centre. It opened in 2000 in Unit 9 of the new Westgate Shopping Park constructed on the site of the former
Basildon Council temporary office demountables and original Towngate Theatre.
It was a very competitive area in which to open a new public house as in the unit next door was Yates's Wine Lodge
(this became Rubarto and finally Cahoots) and directly opposite in Market Square was The Moon on the Square and a stones
throw from that is The Beehive.
It closed suddenly in 2010 apparently to undergo a refurbishment but in the event it never reopened.
It took its name from a former road called Towngate that previously ran off Fodderwick to a junction with the original
Roundacre roundabout. The first Towngate Theatre (Arts Centre) was in Towngate and its upstairs bar was known as
the Towngate. Since its closure the unit has remained vacant to this day. |
