The Double Six was a public house that stood in Whitmore Way at the junction with
The Hatherley. It opened in 1962 with both a saloon and public bar, living accommodation above, and an on-site off licence.
It's likely the name comes from the top scoring piece in a set of dominoes. It became well known as a music venue where
any number of local bands and artists graced its stage as well as those from further afield. Strippers were even known to do a turn
there back in the 1980s. It was run by the St. George's Taverns (East) chain. For a time during the 1980s it was renamed
the Flying Childers (after the famous thoroughbred horse, b.1714 - d.1741). The former 3 times (1973, 1974 and 1977) Grand National
horse race winner 'Red Rum' appeared at the re-opening ceremony to mark the change of name, but this was short lived and it had
reverted back to its original name at the time of closure around the late 1990s. Some period photographs of the exterior show the
name as 'Double Six' without 'The', including its hanging sign. It may also have been known briefly as 'The Lodge' when the 'Flying
Childers' name was replaced. Following closure, the building was put up for sale as building land, and following a fire, was
fenced off from the road and finally demolished in 2003, with the site being cleared for
development. Residential flats off Whitmore Way along with properties in a new cul-de-sac called Havalon Close were then built in its place. Some of the many bands and
artists known to have played there include: Clemen Pull, Otis Waygood Band, Prowler, After The Fire,
The Rezillos, Trapeze, Iron Maiden, Breathe, Granny Grunt, Street, Montana Red, Sta-Prest, Rico Daniels,
HGV, Dogwatch, Burglar Bill, The Crooks, No Idea, The Only Ones, Consortium, Brad Trower, Jackie Lynton Band,
Eddie and the Hot Rods, Panic, Steve Hooker Band, Cock Sparrer, Screaming Abdabs (featuring Alison Moyet),
Glyder and The Pinkees. The saloon bar stage was sited between the outer toilet block and later
moved in 1977 to the back wall nearest the car park. During these times an admission fee of 50p
was introduced for some performances. Some former publicans include Roy and Doris Pallister
from late 1966 or early 1967 to around August 1968 and Douglas Richford from 1972/73. |
