The 16 units comprising the neighbourhood centre at Timberlog Lane was under construction during
1954. Eleven of the units are in Timberlog Lane and the remaining three, odd numbered 1 - 5, are in Long Riding. Above the Timberlog Log Lane shops
are a combination of two storey maisonettes in one block and a second three storey block of maisonettes over 1st floor flats. Perhaps in anticipation
of the centre's completion a numbering sequence was introduced during c.1954 for existing properties in Timberlog Lane.
The first shops were let in early 1955. Stewards, T.V. and electrical dealers of Vange were one of the first to open on 2nd
March 1955 along with Cox Bros. butchers and Warren's fish and chip shop, located in the short Long Riding parade.
A public car park was also provided, along with three public telephone boxes set in to the outer post office wall, though these
would later be resited. Some of the past and present businesses to have traded at Barstable: |

Other points of interest:
1) The Long Riding/Timberlog Lane
road junction is often referred to as 'Stacey's Corner'. It took its name from the Stacey family who previously lived further
along Timberlog Lane at the corner with the original Mopsies Road at what had been a right hand bend along the original course of the road
in the direction of Craylands. That section continuing off the bend was eventually renamed Timberlog Close and closed off to
through traffic in 1965 as a new section of Timberlog Lane had already been constructed between Chittock Gate and a new
junction with Broadmayne. The Stacey family, Edward and Winifred and their 13 children, had lived on the corner of that bend
since 1920 where they made a living as greengrocers, as well as selling logs, paraffin and coal from their property smallholding,
which doubled as a shop. Their property, called Mopsies, stood in the way of future development planned for the area and was
compulsory purchased by Basildon Development Corporation in 1954. It was the corner of this bend that was the original
'Stacey's Corner'. Coincidently, at the time of the completion of the Barstable neighbourhood shopping centre in 1955, one of the
first traders were L. Stacey, who ran a hardware shop at 221 Timberlog Lane. It is sometimes mistakenly thought that it was this
unrelated business that gave its name to the road junction. |
