The Bull Inn was a public house in London Road, Pitsea.
The public house as it was up to closure mainly dated from 1889 when it replaced an earlier inn of timber construction that may
have dated from the 18th century. Although located in Pitsea its position in London Road is just beyond the boundary for
the area designated for the 'New Town' of Basildon, though still within the Basildon borough.
Sometime during the early 20th century the 'Inn' was dropped until around 1980 when its
name was changed to the Prohibition. Just how long this name change lasted is still unclear as it would appear it became
Beano's for a time before reverting back to the Prohibition which second time around lasted to the late 1990s when it reverted
back to being the Bull Inn.
It first appeared in the post office telephone directory January 1948 edition where it was listed as Bull Hotel on Vange
2282. It had the same listing in the 1964 edition; only the number had changed to Vange 228211 and continued to be listed
as the Bull Hotel into the mid 1970s.
Outwardly its appearance changed little over its lifetime; the two main exceptions being the left side frontage which
was built to a single storey but at some point was later extended to match the existing height of the main structure, and the
removal of all three of its prominent chimney stacks.
Unfortunately the pub did have a reputation for antisocial behaviour leading to violent incidents which came to a head in 2010
when the council insisted on the removal of the landlady. With a new landlady in charge the pub was able to turn its image
around in its final years.
For much of its life it was run by Charrington's (later Bass Charrington) though in more recent times had been run by
Punch Taverns who acquired Bass Charrington's public houses in 1997, but at the time it was put on the market for £400,000
in January 2013 Row Investments were the owners.
It closed in 2015.
In late January 2016 hoarding was erected around the building and the public house was then demolished throughout
February and much of March 2016. Although located within the Green Belt a new residential development called Bull Mews was given
planning permission and properties erected soon after. |
