Pitsea School opened as a Council school in 1909. Sometime before the
1960s and possibly between 1926/27, the original frontage was extended to include new classrooms.
A swimming pool for the infant school was officially opened on Saturday
13th June 1970. The 16ft by 24ft pool was purchased at a cost of £459 and assembled on-site by a group of volunteer
parents. Though not as deep as a standard learner pool the headmistress of the time, Mrs Goscombe, was confident the
pool could be used to teach water confidence. For many years the school was known as
Pitsea County Infant & Junior Schools. From 1st September, 2003 the infant school was renamed
The Len Wastell Infant School in honour of the popular long serving school governor who died in
1999. Throughout this period the junior schools' name remained unchanged. From September 2015
the two schools amalgamated under the new name Maple Grove Primary School.
