The open space or parkland at Lee Chapel South was created by Basildon Development Corporation in the 1960s during the construction of Basildon new town.

Not far behind the trees on the western side can be traced the original route of Primrose Hill, which began at the former occupation railway crossing close to the site of Staneway bridge and to which gave its name to a small plotland type area of houses that were lost in the creation of the western end of Lee Chapel South. A few telegraphs poles survived to the early 2000s before being removed as a possible safety hazard due to rotting.
