Liberal. The General Election of December 1910 produced a
hung parliament. The Liberal party won the most seats and formed a minority government with
the support of the Irish Parliamentary Party.
*John Hendley Morrison Kirkwood resigned from his seat on 06th March, 1912 and on 08th
March, 1912 became a Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds. His coalition Unionist successor, The
Hon. Rupert Edward Cecil Lee Guinness, retained the seat in an unopposed by-election on 16th
March, 1912 and stood until 1918 when the South-East Essex seat was reorganised to create a new
Southend seat in which he became its first elected MP. The by-election went unopposed as the
Liberal party declined to nominate a candidate and a Mr. Charles Stock of Pitsea had considered
standing as a Labour candidate but failed to get the support from the party. |
