In 1959 the County of Essex (Basildon
Urban District Wards and Councillors) Order, 1959, dated 4th November, 1958, divided the urban
district of Basildon into nine Wards and increased the number of elected councillors from 26 to 28. The
number of Polling Districts created was increased from 35 to 38 by an Order of the Essex County
Council dated 20th January, 1959, known as the Parliamentary Polling Districts Order No.2, 1959. |

In 1963 the County of Essex (Basildon Urban District - Number of Councillors) Order, 1963,
increased the number of councillors elected from 28 to 29. As a result Central Ward now returned two councillors. The decision to increase Central
Ward, which labour councillors felt was under represented, was initially defeated at a council meeting held on 7th December, 1961. It was later approved
following another vote held on 2nd August, 1962. |

In 1967 the County of Essex (Basildon

district of Basildon into fourteen Wards and increased the number of elected councillors from
29 to 46. An increase from 38 Polling Districts to 40 was created by an Order of the Essex
County Council dated 25th October, 1966, known as the Parliamentary Polling Districts Order,
1966. The first elections were held on 20th May, 1967. |
