The date today is Tuesday, March 25, 2025
1961The Locarno Ballroom at No. 23 Blenheim House, Market Pavement, Basildon opens. It was one of a large group of ballrooms run by Mecca Ltd. In 1970 it was renamed Tiffany's through to 1974 and following that Raquels to the 1990s. Many famous bands played there including Depeche Mode (twice), Hermans Hermits, The Kinks, Manfred Mann, The Moody Blues, The Move, The Who (twice) and the Dave Clark Five, who had a residency. It closed as Club Uropa in 1998.
1925The A127 London to Southend Arterial Road opened by H.R.H. Prince Henry. The road was initially single carriageway on the section passing Basildon but this was duelled sometime during the 1930s.
